Schafik Jorge Hándal Hándal was born on October 13, 1930 and died on January 24, 2006. In 1950 he joined the Communist Party of El Salvador (PCS). From 1952 to 1956 he lived in exile in Chile and was active in the Communist Party of that country. In 1957 he was appointed General Secretary of the Departmental Committee of the PCS in San Salvador. In 1959 he was elected member of the Central Committee and in 1973 he assumed the position of General Secretary of the Party.

His career as a leader of the PCS included intense activity in various fronts and coalitions: the April and May Revolutionary Movement, then the April and May Revolutionary Party (PRAM, 1959); the National Front of Civic Orientation (FNOC, 1959); the United Front of Revolutionary Action (FUAR, 1961); the Renovating Action Party (PAR, 1966); May 9 Revolutionary Party (PR-9M, 1970), among others.

In 1979-1980 he played a leading role in the creation of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). As Secretary General of the PCS he was Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberation (FAL) and member of the General Command of the FMLN. He headed the negotiating commission for the 1992 Peace Accords and the Monitoring Commission for compliance with these Accords, as well as being a member of the National Commission for the Consolidation of Peace (COPAZ).

He served as General Coordinator of the FMLN (1992-1994). He was a candidate for mayor of San Salvador in 1994, deputy and head of the FMLN bench in the Legislative Assembly (1997-2000, 2000-2003 and 2003-2006). In 2004 he was a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.

Schafik Jorge Hándal Hándal, nació el 13 de octubre de 1930 y falleció el 24 de enero de 2006. En 1950 ingresa al Partido Comunista de El Salvador (PCS). De 1952 a 1956 vive exiliado en Chile y milita en el Partido Comunista de ese país. En 1957 es designado Secretario General del Comité Departamental del PCS en San Salvador, en 1959 es electo miembro del Comité Central y en 1973 asume la Secretaría General del Partido.

Su trayectoria como dirigente del PCS incluye una intensa actividad en varios frentes y coaliciones: Movimiento Revolucionario Abril y Mayo, luego Partido Revolucionario Abril y Mayo (PRAM, 1959); Frente Nacional de Orientación Cívica (FNOC, 1959); Frente Unido de Acción Revolucionaria (FUAR, 1961); Partido Acción Renovadora (PAR, 1966); Partido Revolucionario 9 de Mayo (PR-9M, 1970), entre otros.

En 1979-1980 desempeñó un papel protagónico en la creación del Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN). En su condición de Secretario General del PCS fue Comandante en Jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación (FAL) y miembro de la Comandancia General del FMLN. Encabezó la comisión negociadora de los Acuerdos de Paz de 1992 y la Comisión de Seguimiento del cumplimiento de estos Acuerdos, así como integró la Comisión Nacional para la Consolidación de la Paz (COPAZ).

Desempeñó la Coordinación General del FMLN (1992-1994). Fue candidato a alcalde de San Salvador en 1994, diputado y jefe de la bancada del FMLN en la Asamblea Legislativa (1997-2000, 2000-2003 y 2003-2006). En 2004 fue candidato a la Presidencia de la República.
