Title
Police wanted poster for Schafik Hándal, 1962
Description
This item is a digital reproduction of a poster held in the Casa Museo Schafik Hándal in San Salvador, El Salvador. The poster is a wanted poster produced by the Salvadoran police as part of its repression of the Communist Party of El Salvador (PCS) in the early 1960s. In his memoirs, "Legado de Revolucionario" (Part 1), Schafik Hándal describes how the armed wing of the PSC (at that time named the Frente Unido de Acción Revolucionaria, or FUAR) was infiltrated by police agents in 1962. The poster was produced in the aftermath of a raid that took place on 5 June, 1962, from which Schafik managed to escape. The text reads: "NOW THIS FACE. It is that of a pernicious foreigner ("Turk" and foreigner for more detail) who is wanted by the authorities of Public Security to banish him from the country. If you see him anywhere, INFORM THE POLICE OR THE NATIONAL GUARD to help ensure the peace of the nation. Anticommunist campaign against FUAR."
