This item is a digital reproduction of a photograph held in the Casa Museo Schafik Hándal in San Salvador, El Salvador. The photograph shows Schafik Hándal receiving a military salute outside a headquarters of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) around 1980. The writing on the sign underneath the star states: “The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Tel al-Zaatar region.” Tel al-Zaatar was a Palestinian refugee camp in northeastern Beirut, Lebanon, that was destroyed by Lebanese Christian militia in 1976. Schafik carried out various visits to the Middle East during this period to foster ties of solidarity and procure arms for the revolutionary war in El Salvador.
