Item

Title
Diver, Solomon's Pools, c.1940-1946
Description
This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress. This image depicts a man diving off a wooden raft into one of the pools. Soloman's Pools are three large water reservoirs located outside of Bethlehem on the road to Hebron, which date back to the 2nd century BC. They were part of a complex ancient water system that comprised acqueducts and springs. As is evident here, the pools also took on a different role as a picnic and swimming resort for locals. This photo was taken by the Matson Photo Service which replaced the American Colony Photo Department in Jerusalem.
