Description
-
This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress. This image depicts bathers taking a break from the water and watching other bathers swimming. Soloman's Pools are three large water reservoirs located outside of Bethlehem on the road to Hebron, which date back to the 2nd century BC. They were part of a complex ancient water system that comprised acqueducts and springs. As is evident here, the pools also took on a different role as a picnic and swimming resort for locals. This photo was taken by the Matson Photo Service which replaced the American Colony Photo Department in Jerusalem. This image exists as part of the Soloman's Pools collection within the Library of Congress project in the Planet Bethlehem archive.
