Description
-
This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress. This image depicts a group of bathers in upper pool, using paddles and a raft. Soloman's Pools are three large water reservoirs located outside of Bethlehem on the road to Hebron, which date back to the 2nd century BC. They were part of a complex ancient water system that comprised acqueducts and springs. As is evident here, the pools also took on a different role as a picnic and swimming resort for locals. This photo was taken by the Matson Photo Service which replaced the American Colony Photo Department in Jerusalem.
