Description
-
This is a digital reproduction of an image held in the Library of Congress. This image depicts a Westerner floating in the Dead Sea, comically posing with a book in one hand and an umbrella in the other. The stereotype of relaxed travellers in the Middle East was a common orientalist trope in Western travel writing. This photograph is a cropped version of the original. The image is part of a collection that was gifted to the Library of Congress by the board of directors of the American Colony of Jerusalem.
