Description
-
This is a digital reproduction of images held in the Library of Congress. These images depict the diary entries of Eric Matson in 1946. Matson was one of the leading photographers of the American Colony in Jerusalem who had moved to the American Colony as a young child from Sweden. His entries from this year contain detailed descriptions of everyday life in Palestine during the first six months of the year, including the worsening political situation. In early August Matson leaves Palestine and returns to the USA to avoid the increasing violence in Palestine. From this point forth the diary describes his life in Southern California from where he continued to operate the American Colony Photo Department, working with employees still based in Jerusalem.
