Wadie Salah (103 years old from al-Ta'amra) interviewed in 1995. He discusses the following: locust plague and how they used to put locusts in a hole and burn them; spread of disease and starvation during World War I; people used to collect animal dung and dead animal bones and boil them in water to survive. Salem Salah (103 years old from al-Ta'amra) He discusses the following: locust plague; emigration caused by the dire economic situation during the war; people used to eat herbs to survive. Mra‘e Sha‘ebat (95 years old from Beit Sahour). She discusses the following: locust plague and how they multiplied because every egg contained 99 locusts; spread of disease, especially cholera; people used to travel east to find food to bring back; discusses Ottoman military conscription. Khadeja Ramadan (95 years old from al-Khader). She discusses the following: locust plague - the appearance of the the locusts and their large size; used to put the locusts in a hole and burn them; the locusts eggs meant they kept multiplying; military conscription – anyone caught trying to run away would be killed.
