This collection consists of scanned copies of the weekly newspaper Voz Popular, held in the Casa Museo Schafik Hándal in San Salvador. In the 1970s Voz Popular was the press organ of the Communist Party of El Salvador (PCS). The Palestinian-Salvadoran Schafik Hándal (from a Bethlehemite family) was a regular contributor to the newspaper in his role as secretary general of the PCS in this period. In addition to reporting on the political situation in El Salvador, the newspaper addressed cultural issues as well as analysis of regional and international news. A copy of the paper cost C 0.15 Colón cents (Salvadoran) and was sold publicly; but its printing and distribution was carried out clandestinely. The repressive forces of El Salvador at that time carried out raids of the newspaper's printing press facilities and persecuted its workers and contributors.
